Since September 2004, Professor Carlos Valderrama is Director of the Department of Electronics and Microelectronics, SEMi, at the Polytechnic Faculty of the University of Mons (UMons/FPMs, Mons) in Belgium. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1998 at the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (INPG/TIMAlab, Grenoble) in France, the MSc degree in 1993 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ/COPPE, Rio de Janeiro) in Brazil, and the electrical engineering degree in 1989 at National University of Cordoba (UNC, Cordoba) in Argentina.

He was invited professor in 1998 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN/DIMAp, Natal) and in 2004 at Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE/CIN, Recife) in Brazil. Between 1999 and 2003, he was leading the Hardware Flow division of CoWare NV in Belgium (today acquired by Synopsys) developing ESL/EDA design tools, infrastructure and quality assistance to the development of products for customers such as Sony and MEI in Japan and ST Microelectronics in France. He was actively participating in more than 20 academic/industrial projects, several European (EUREKA: MEDEA 4GRadio and Witness, and ITEA: DiYSE and MANY) and national (BEWARE, FEDER MEDIATIC Tracemedia, ARC OLIMP) projects. He is active member participating at the organization of two COST actions (ICT COST Action IC1303 Algorithms, Architectures and Platforms for Enhanced Living Environments AAPELE and CA COST Action CA16226 Indoor living space improvement: Smart Habitat for the Elderly Sheld-On).

SEMI (http://www.semi.fpms.ac.be/) is specialized on power in general, since power management of integrated circuits, to power processing using FPGA technology and low power consumption of embedded systems.
